Membership in IARR

Regular and student membership includes the following:

  • A subscription to the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships (8 issues per year)
  • A subscription to the journal Personal Relationships (4 issues per year)
  • Two annual newsletters
  • Discounts on conference registration fees
  • Access to a membership directory
  • Publisher discounts

Student members must provide proof of their student status within 7 days of web sign-up. A brief email from a faculty member to IARR Secretary-Treasurer Brooke Feeney (iarr@andrew.cmu.edu) will serve as proof. Domestic partner membership includes all of the above except the journals. Note that this type of membership is only available to those whose partner is also a member (regular or student). Associate membership also includes all of the regular membership rewards, except the journals.

Membership runs from January 1 to December 31. Payment of dues is requested prior to January 1 of each year (current members will receive an email reminding them to pay their dues in the fall of each year). Those who join between January 1 and September 30 of a given year will receive that year’s back issues of the journals (Personal Relationships and the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships) and the newsletters. Those who join after September 30 of a given year will be registered as members for the following year and will begin receiving all member benefits in that following year.

For those joining between January 15 and September 30 within a given year, please note the following: Member mailing information is provided to our two journal publishers (Blackwell for Personal Relationships and Sage for Journal of Social and Personal Relationships) four times a year. Depending on the exact date that you initiate or renew your membership, this means that you may experience a significant delay in receiving journals, as up to three months may pass prior to your mailing information being forwarded to the publishers. Once the publishers receive new mailing information, it takes less than a month for journal shipping. Despite the delay, rest assured that you will receive all issues of JSPR and PR for the membership year in which you paid dues (including those preceding the date you joined within a given membership year).

The following table was crafted to assist members in figuring out how long they can expect to wait to begin receiving issues of the journals:

Joining/renewing between… Sent to publishers on… Expect to receive initial issue in…
October 1 and January 14 January 15 February
January 15 and March 31 April 1 May
April 1 and June 30 July 1 August
July 1 and September 30 October 1 November

Moral of the story: Renewing your membership each year by early January ensures that all journal issues will be sent to you as they are published throughout the year, without delay, as you will be on the initial list sent to the publishers for that year. Otherwise, consult the above table.

IARR is now using the service provider 123Signup.com to automate our membership record-keeping and registration procedures. Dues can be paid by credit card (VISA or Mastercard) or by check. From the options below, prospective and current IARR members can choose among the following services:

  • Update your current member profile (click here). Use this option to check or change your name, mailing address, email address, or research interests. This page is password-protected. You will need to use the unique password that was sent to you via email by the IARR Secretary/Treasurer in order to access your profile. If you have forgotten your password, you should still go ahead and click on this link. You will see a link there that can be used to have your password automatically sent to your email address.

To allow IARR and other members to contact you, please keep your member profile up-to-date. The information in your IARR member profile is searchable by other IARR members via the online, password-protected IARR Membership Directory. Changes you make to your IARR member profile will be immediately implemented and reflected to other IARR members in the Membership Directory.  Members who wish to "opt out" of the Membership Directory may do so by indicating this preference within their member profile.
