The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) would like to announce the following funding opportunities:

The Clara Mayo Grants

The Clara Mayo Grant program was set up to support masters’ theses or pre-dissertation research on aspects of sexism, racism, or prejudice, with preference given to students enrolled in a terminal master’s program. Studies of the application of theory or the design of interventions or treatments to address these problems are welcome.  Individuals who are SPSSI members and who have matriculated in graduate programs in psychology, applied social science, and related disciplines are eligible for application. Deadline: October 10, 2008

The Grants-In-Aid Program

The SPSSI Committee on Grants-in-Aid (GIA) wishes to support scientific research in social problem areas related to the basic interests and goals of SPSSI and particularly those that are not likely to receive support from traditional sources. The Committee especially encourages proposals involving (a) unique and timely research opportunities, (b) underrepresented institutions, graduate students, and junior scholars, (c) volunteer research teams, and (d) actual, not pilot, projects. The applicant must be a member of SPSSI. Deadline: October 15, 2008

The Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Prize

The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues is proud to announce the Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Prize honoring the memory of the late Dr. Gordon W. Allport, a founder and past president of SPSSI.  An award of $1000 is given to "the best paper or article of the year on intergroup relations" - a field about which Professor Allport cared deeply. Originality of the contribution, whether theoretical or empirical, will be given special weight. The research area of intergroup relations includes such dimensions as age, gender, and socioeconomic status, as well as ethnicity. Entries can be either papers published during the current year or unpublished manuscripts. Deadline: October 3, 2008

Book announcement

Sage is releasing my statistics textbook (Applied Statistics: From Bivariate through Multivariate Techniques) on August 30th, 2007.

This book answers important conceptual questions in clear, simple language (Why is there variance? What is a partition of variance? How do researcher design decisions tend to influence the values of test statistics such as t? What does it mean to "statistically control" for one variable when evaluating the nature and strength of association between other variables? What does it mean to say "p < .05"?). Each chapter focuses on an empirical example (including raw data, SPSS screen shots, syntax, output, and Results section). Instructor ancillary materials include PowerPoint, a SAS supplement, glossary, comprehension questions, and (for instructors only) complete answers to comprehension questions.

To find out more about the book please visit this web site:
http://pubpages.unh.edu/~rmw

Complimentary instructor copies are available through the Sage website. Look for:
Rebecca M. Warner
